Truck Yard's First Winter Is Restaurant Park's Real Test

What happens to a 600-seat beer garden on Central Expressway when the first hard norther comes through?

Truck Yard Richardson opened September 1, 2026, at 740 S. Central Expressway, so it hasn't been through a winter yet. That first winter is the biggest open question about the place. The last patio bar on this lot opened in April 2023 and had closed by January 2024, and its owners said in writing that the weather played a big part. Meanwhile the smaller counter-service spots a few steps away have kept their doors open.

How a Motel Site Became a Patio Bet

Restaurant Park didn't grow on its own. The City of Richardson put it together.

  1. 2009. City Council adopted the West Spring Valley Reinvestment Strategy. Redeveloping the old Continental Inn site was one of its five original concepts.
  2. 2012. The city bought the 1960s-era Continental Inn, tore it down and assembled the parcels around it.
  3. 2015. Hermansen Land Development finished buying the five-acre tract from the city. The plan called for up to seven restaurants with patios around a central plaza and fountain, plus a pedestrian portal at the back for the neighborhoods behind it.
  4. 2017. The park opened with two buildings and room for seven restaurants.
  5. December 2020. Council unanimously approved two more restaurants on the adjacent lot, along with larger outdoor dining areas.
  6. April 2023. Old 75 Beer Garden opened.
  7. June 2024. Council approved zoning changes for Truck Yard and a sister brewery on the former Old 75 site.
  8. September 1, 2026. Truck Yard opened.

The patio was part of the plan from the start. The 2015 announcement described "lively patio dining areas" around the plaza. The site's history shows how hard that idea is to sustain at large scale.

The Lot That Ran on Good Weather

Old 75 was big. According to The Dallas Morning News, the beer garden covered nearly 20,000 square feet and had two bars, indoor and outdoor seating, live music most nights, lawn games and cabanas for rent. In that same report, ownership explained the closure in a written statement:

"The reality is that our outdoor beer garden has been significantly affected by the weather here in North Texas."

The statement also said the owners hoped Old 75 could "retool the venue" and come back. A new operator retooled the space instead, and the biggest change was built for exactly the problem Old 75 described.

What Truck Yard Built Differently

The Dallas Morning News reported that Truck Yard Richardson can seat more than 600 people and includes a climate-controlled indoor area with garage-door walls. Owner Jason Boso told the paper the crowd ranges from about 40 people on a warm weekday to a few thousand on a nice Saturday.

The size of that indoor room is what this winter will test. In 2024, Boso told Community Impact that Truck Yard would have about 80 to 90 indoor seats. If the finished room is close to that plan, roughly one seat in seven is indoors, and the other six depend on the weather. The planned brewery building next door was supposed to add the larger indoor room, about 200 seats. That building hasn't opened.

The design leans into the area's past. The patio is styled after the 1950s and '60s, with mismatched lawn chairs and tables made from truck beds. One seating area sits under a replica of the diamond-shaped sign from the Como Motel, the mid-1950s motor lodge on the east side of Central Expressway. Boso tried to buy the original sign and had a copy made when he couldn't.

Here's what Truck Yard lists on its Richardson page:

  • Hours: Monday through Wednesday 4 p.m. to midnight; Thursday 11 a.m. to midnight; Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.; Sunday 11 a.m. to midnight
  • Age policy: 21 and up after 9 p.m.
  • Happy hour: Monday through Thursday, 4 to 6 p.m.
  • Music: Live every day, booked through 13th Floor Music. Most October weeknight sets run 6 to 9 p.m., with acts such as Brian Lynn Jones and Colton Blue, and some weekend days have earlier or different time slots. Artists and times can change, so the live music calendar is the place to check before you go.
  • Food: An on-site kitchen and bar plus rotating food trucks.

Mondays through Wednesdays start at 4 p.m., so the venue's lunch traffic comes Thursday through Sunday.

The Suites That Keep Getting Filled

The rest of Restaurant Park has a different track record. These are the suites at 744 and 746 S. Central Expressway as of mid-October 2026:

Address Tenant Status
744 S. Central Expwy, Ste. 210 Dog Haus Biergarten Open daily, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
744 S. Central Expwy, #220 OMG Tacos Open daily
746 S. Central Expwy, Ste. 120 Sal's Nashville Hot Chicken Opened March 27, 2026, in the former Halal Guys space
746 S. Central Expwy, Ste. 100 Nashmi Announced; opening date TBD

Community Impact described Dog Haus as one of the park's first tenants. Dog Haus and OMG Tacos both appeared on the tenant list in December 2020, when the expansion was approved. Both are still operating six years later. In the same stretch, the big beer-garden lot cycled through Old 75, a vacancy of more than two years and a full rebuild.

The 746 building has turned over too, but each space was re-leased. The Halal Guys closed its Richardson location in March 2026. That same month, Sal Afridi opened the second location of Sal's Nashville Hot Chicken there. His first is in Plano, and he called the restaurant a "homegrown DFW concept" in Community Impact's coverage. Texadelphia closed in Suite 100 in fall 2025. Nashmi, a Jordanian restaurant serving shawarma, kebabs and fresh-baked bread, has announced that suite as its first Texas location. As of Community Impact's October 14 report, the opening date was still listed as TBD.

The counter-service tenants don't need a pleasant Saturday to fill their seats. When one of these smaller suites has emptied, another restaurant has lined up for it, in the Halal Guys space within the same month.

What's Promised Next Door

The 2024 zoning approval allowed two things that haven't shown up yet. One is a microbrewery or brewpub. The other is a Ferris wheel up to 45 feet tall. Boso said the brewery, Second Rodeo Brewing, would go in a new building next to Truck Yard. At the time, it was expected to open about two years after Truck Yard. Truck Yard itself took longer than expected. In 2024, Boso estimated an opening in late 2024, or early 2025 if there were delays. Second Rodeo has not opened. The Ferris wheel is allowed under the zoning, but nothing has been built.

The brewery building matters most for the winter question. A 200-seat indoor room next door would give the site far more shelter than the garage-door space alone. Until it's built, Truck Yard's cold-weather capacity is whatever fits under one roof.

The 2024 plan also set live-music cutoffs of 9 p.m. on weeknights and 11 p.m. on weekends. The current posted weeknight sets end by 9 p.m. If you live on the James Drive side of the park, that's the schedule to know.

The City Is Counting On It

The city's Week in Review for September 4, 2026 placed Truck Yard in Restaurant Park "along Central Expressway between Floyd Road and James Drive." It said the venue adds activity to the park "as reinvestment continues in the area." That's the same reinvestment the city started in 2012 when it bought the Continental Inn. Fourteen years later, the lot that matches the original "lively patio" idea most closely has a new tenant with a weather plan and a sister building that hasn't been built.

December through February will be the first winter on that lot for an operator that built indoor space for bad weather.

If you live close enough to hear the music from Truck Yard's patio on a Friday night, new tenants and city reinvestment along Central Expressway are part of what nearby homes are worth.
